this residence in south korea’s south jeolla province has been designed for a couple who wanted to feel each other’s presence in all areas of the home. protected from the neighborhood that surrounds it,‘walden house’is articulated around a walled courtyard and a fruit tree that remains visible from every room in the house. meanwhile, a volume that contains a second storey bedroom protrudes above the walls that surround the property, creating a sheltered space within the courtyard below.

designed by formative architects, a firm based in seoul,‘walden house’sits on a site measuring 613.7 square meters (6,606 sqf) and has a total height of 7.5 meters (25 feet). despite its private nature, the dwelling allows its occupants to take in views of the region’s landscape from the upper level. contained beneath the gable roof, the bedroom affords views into the distance, while an adjoining roof terrace allows occupants to enjoy an elevated outdoor position in warm weather.
