P.I architects has designed a new spa for mango bay resort, a well-known destination in vietnam‘s phu quoc island. tucked away in the rich vegetation of the surrounding forest, the spa comprises four rectangular volumes developed around a landscape pond. the rammed earth walls of the four volumes are combined with wooden louver doors and windows, and topped by extended thatched roofs. the result is an airy and comfortable space that embodies the resort’s rustic, cosy spirit.

mango bay resort is an eco-friendly destination in phu quoc island, with only 44 bungalows on a piece of land that spreads over 10 hectares. P.I architects was invited to design the resort’s new spa, situated on a light slope toward the sea, hidden behind the bungalows and surrounded by jungle. the project consists of four buildings surrounding a landscape pond and linked by covered walkways. the two main buildings enclose the reception area, changing rooms with showers, treatment rooms and relaxation areas, while the other two volumes consist of only treatment rooms.
in terms of landscape, the project follows the resort’s spirit by integrating local plants and flowers in the garden. the only exception is the plumerias, which are planted in the landscape pond and represent a new beginning and expectation of peace. ‘during the construction stage, we tried to avoid destroying the surrounding jungle as much as possible,’ explains P.I architects. right after the completion of the project, new trees were planted to replace the ones that were cut down.
