located on the atlantic coast, in le pouliguen, france, avignon-clouet architects has realized a private summer residence with a removable roof. dubbed‘the topless house’, the project replaces a dilapidated veranda formerly adjoining the main dwelling, offering multiple spatial configurations, and framing beautiful sea views.

equipped with this removable roof, the house by avignon-clouet architects lets the first rays of sunshine to brighten up the interior. the roof overhang seems like it defies the laws of gravity, and acts as a cap extending the living space. the sliding windows fitted with the‘vitrocsa turnable corner’system can be handled and stored to allow free movement towards the raised terrace in polished concrete.
stretching 7 m in length, the kitchen cabinet ends its course on a back door leading to a master bedroom designed like a small house with its own gable roof. its interior geometry is disturbed by the encounter with the access tunnel that links it to the main entrance of the house. this hellenistic-looking passage contains the wardrobe. equipped with a full-story bathroom, it takes on the appearance of a hotel room.
outside, a removable terrace tray covers and uncovers a staircase leading under the ramparts and giving direct access to the beach. when coming back from swimming, vacationers can use an outdoor shower with a huge sandblasted glass door. in the evening, the resin underside of the mobile roof, whether closed or open, illuminates the space.
