northern california based artist burls art creates guitars using unconventional materials, such as paper, pencils, and himalayan salt. the artist showcases his work – which he calls‘guitart’– on his youtube channel, presenting each project’s construction process, along with a demo song/riff at the end.

for his latest project, burls art has made a guitar out of a 50lb block of pink himalayan salt. ‘this is pink himalayan salt… commonly used for grilling meats on BBQ’s, or in my case, building guitars’ he comments on his youtube video. the artist calls this attempt ‘one of his most bizarre ideas yet’.
the artist has also built – not just once, but three separate times – unique guitars out of colored pencils. in each attempt, he uses 1200 pencils, experimenting with the ideal orientation, both in terms of aesthetics and structure. in another impressive video, he constructs a guitar out of 800 paper sheets, glued together with epoxy resin.
