KOGAA explores the underused potential of empty urban spaces with‘circo aéreo’, a public installation inserted in an empty lot in spain. created for concéntrico 06, logroño’s international festival of architecture and design, the installation comprises an inflatable ring (recycled from a previous use) on the upper part. its lower part features a wooden body that works both as a structural holder and as a seating amphitheater for events.

presented during concentrico 06, KOGAA’s‘circo aéreo’re-actives underused urban locations by providing a stage for events, and a place to hang out, or rest. the four-meter-high, ring-shaped inflatable serves as a canvas for projections and a light source during the evening, as well as a shade spot for hot days. at the same time, it acts as a visual reminder of the issue of CO2 production in our cities by representing the amount of 1 ton in the size of the air balloon. therefore, it raises environmental awareness in the public realm, giving citizens the opportunity to reflect on their current way of living.
with a low entrance height of only 1.5 meters, the installation requires visitors to lean down in order to get inside, where they find themselves surrounded by the pure shape and infinity of the white circle. ‘the inflatable structure is recycled from a previous use in the city of brno, and we are glad to be able to reuse the material with an altered and improved function,‘ notes KOGAA, ‘we believe it is imperative nowadays to try and consume less and try and re-fit first.’
