katerina kliwadenko and mario novas have been commissioned by the shelter streaming platform to create a six-episode series visualizing the stories behind different architectural projects in chile. dubbed‘architecture on the edge’, the film captures the structures, which are neither new nor unknown, while revealing the ideas behind them, their strong and weak points, as well as the difficulties in their realization. all this, with the aim of inspiring other people by bringing them closer to the different landscapes of this country.

the series by kliwadenko novas focuses on the difficulties faced in the construction of the structures, due to the various natural adversities of chile. meanwhile, the passage of time allows the architects to reflect on their past work, analyze which ideas were good, which ones they regret and what impact they think their project generated. ‘regardless of (…) the recognition, which at the end of the day I don’t give a damn about, it became a house that brings our family together to this day,’ mentions architect mathias klotz in one of the episodes.
atacama desert in chile
the episode series seeks to give a different perspective to all buildings and, thus opening a window for the exploration of a different story. the projects featured in the series include the desert interpretation center by emilio marín and juan carlos lópez in the atacama desert, klotz house by mathias klotz in tongoy, nishizawa house by ryue nishizawa in los vilos, shangri cabin by la de magdalena besomi + DRAA architects in las trancas, cabaña río plata by elton léniz arquitectos + francisco cruz in pucón and museum of modern art by edward rojas on the island of chiloe.
